Green Citizens Australia Network (GCAN) is a network of conscious citizens who care and act to address the most pressing environmental concerns facing humanity. We aim to play our part by making choices that are better for the environment so that we may leave a beautiful planet for the generations to come.
It is estimated that up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean each year. This includes larger pieces of plastic as well as microplastics – pieces under five millimetres in length. Both these types of plastic have a tremendous impact on marine life. And we’re only speaking of plastic pollution in the ocean here.
It is estimated that the amount of plastic concentration on land is between four and twenty-three times that of the ocean! All this plastic affects not just the animal and plant life, but us humans as well. The chemicals from the plastic seep into the soil and get into the groundwater that we all depend on.
Without a radical shift in our individual lifestyles, the situation will only deteriorate over time. At GCAN, we believe in empowering individuals to make choices that add up over time to make a positive impact.
